Discovering how to live my best life. On purpose.

3 Mom Hacks Every Mama Needs

One thing I love about being friends with a wide variety of mothers of all ages and stages of life is the priceless wisdom they each have! Every mom has her own tips and tricks, or “Mom Hacks,” for making life a little simpler, a little more efficient, or a little more secure.

Here are 3 “Mom Hacks” that have stuck with me over the years.

Cookie Keeping Hack

Sorry, I know the picture quality isn’t the best, but this fresh baked cookie hack is too good not to include in this post! Except for a few outliers who really like a crunchy cookie, who doesn’t just love a freshly baked, warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookie? The only problem is, even if you give some away, you are usually left with leftover cookies. Those cookies are never as good the next day. They turn stale, crumbly, and sad.

At least, they did until my dear friend, Alyssa, shared her family secret with me! Any leftover cookies that you want to keep soft the next day (or next couple of days!), you simply store in an airtight container or Ziplock bag with a piece of sandwich bread.

The sandwich bread magically keeps the cookies soft overnight, and even over the course of a couple of days.

Potty Training Boys

Potty training isn’t my favorite thing in the world, but this hack makes it a little bit more fun!

Did you know, you can draw on a square of toilet paper with a sharpie, and then when you place the paper in the toilet, the paper will “disappear” and only the sharpie will show through?

Note, this only works with a permanent marker. Washable marker designs dissolve right away once they are wet are are far less effective for target practice.

Public Safety - Write Your Number!

When out in public with little ones who don’t have your phone number memorized yet, be sure to write your phone number on their arm!

For this very reason, I keep a sharpie in my diaper bag at all times. Being separated from your toddler in a crowd is terrifying. There is nothing that’ll make your stomach drop faster than looking around and realizing your little one is missing. One thing that can help is to know that they have a resource.

I always write my phone number on my toddler’s arm when we are out in a crowd. That way, when they find a “mommy with kids” like they’ve been taught, that helper can know exactly how to contact me and help reunite us.

This habit is a result of one year at a Halloween Witch Fest. We had gone to the Witch Fest with a group of friends and there were kids EVERYWHERE. We had over a dozen kids between us, and it was a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd at the Fest. We weren’t there long before my toddler went missing. I had been looking directly at him, and turned my head to answer someone’s question for half a second, and then he was gone.

I immediately began to panic. I looked all around and couldn’t see him anywhere. A million scenarios race through your mind in moments like that. Our friends and I began fanning out in all directions, searching and calling his name. It wasn’t until 10 very long minutes later that my son ended up at a Witch Fest booth and we found him.

We’ve never been out in a crowd again without a phone number and a solid plan in case of accidental separation.

*Pro tip - write your number on their arm before applying sunscreen.

These are just three of my very favorite tips and tricks to helping make Mom Life a little easier to navigate. Be sure to stay tuned for Part 2.
