Surprising Ways To Connect With Your Toddler
Have your little ones ever singled you out and asked you to do something for them, maybe even something they already know how to do for themselves?
It is so fascinating to me that toddlers and very small children seek to build connections through service! They ask you, or someone else they want to draw closer to, to get them dressed, to change their diaper, to feed them, to do their hair, to serve them in some small way - because they innately know that when we serve someone else, or when someone else serves us, it creates a deeper connection with that person.
“No, You Do It!”
I remember when I was about 6 years old, my little sister needed a diaper change and she decided that I was the girl for the job! Our mom was about to do it, but my sister demanded I do it instead. I did, and she spent the rest of the day asking specifically me to do little things for her. That experience really did help us create an even more special connection! (Love you, Holly!!)
I noticed our 3 year old daughter doing the same thing with my husband. She was stuck to his hip all day, offering to do things for him, and asking him to do things for her. It was so sweet! Don’t let yourself mistake these little requests for them being needy! (Although that may be the case sometimes... your motherly intuition will know.)
Rather than being needy, they might just be trying to reach out in love, trying in their own way to build the relationships that means the very most to them.
What kinds of things have your toddlers asked you, and just you, to do for them today?
